![]() ![]() That being said, it’s disheartening to see everytime it happens. It’s a weird phenomenon that I’m not sure I’m fully equipped to dissect. Whether it be A$AP Bari, Don Toliver, XXXTentacion, or any of the other numerous artists who’ve had accusations lodged against them, these artists continue to have a spotlight in the world of hip-hop. There’s a tendency in the hip-hop community to not take accusations against notable figures seriously, as artists continue to align themselves with troubling people, unethical parties, or problematic positions on social issues. With my money, I don’t really care what the reason is. It could have something to do with the themes of the album, in forgiving people of their shortcomings and offering them a chance to be new again, as many fans have theorized. The bigger controversy at play, however, was that Marilyn Manson and DaBaby were on stage with West. In the grand scheme of things, this wasn’t a huge deal. Song lengths were different, as were the lengths of verses. Features from notable artists such as Kid Cudi and Jay-Z were not on the LP3 songs. ![]() On the lighter side, certain songs that the fandom had grown accustomed to in their LP2 (listening party two) versions were changed. There are various dramas and controversies that have come out of the third listening party. Faith in the album being released was at an all time high. The party took on an ethereal energy at Soldier Field. When that didn’t happen, three more weeks of radio silence would lead to a final, third listening party in the roots of West’s existence: Chicago. This version of the album would come to be the one that most online fans called the best - with even higher hopes that the album would be coming the night of the listening party. The shape of them was clearer, with full verses and the mix of drums included. The bright light, however, was that the songs sounded good - great even. Two weeks later, the second listening party in Atlanta came and went without a release as well. Any hope that the album was coming out that following night was quickly dashed, as it dawned on everyone that the album was not done. ![]() The songs were especially unfinished, with no drums or flourishes adorning any track and a clearly incomplete mix and master. The first listening party that West held at the Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta was a bit more haphazard than the two that would follow. When it came time to sit down and click away at my keys, though, I found appreciation for the presentation of it all. When the initial rollout for Kanye West’s new album “Donda” started over a month ago, I had an idea of how I wanted to write about it - biting and critical of its apparent sloppiness. ![]()
